I am engaged as an Executive Coach on a retainer basis. My retainer is for six months/60 hours. Most of my coaching is weekly, by telephone. I find this approach very effective. It is important that my client commits to at least 30 minutes to 60 minutes, each week, on the phone, where we will discuss various topics that we have agreed to individually. During the course of the six months, I meet in person with my client for 3 to 4 hours at the beginning, in the middle, and towards the end of that time frame. As I get to know my client, and after I have conducted some skill and character assessments, as well as a 360 degree review with colleagues (and others), we will set some goals that are aimed at personal transformation, success, and well-being. With some clients, these goals are set earlier than others. A second retainer arrangement is not uncommon. As their coach, I work to ensure that they achieve their goals.
My conversations with my clients are strictly confidential, but it is critical that we share the goals of their executives/sponsors. I will keep my client's sponsor apprised of our progress.
During the course of my coaching, my clients' behaviors, performance, and attitudes begin to change. Sometimes the change is dramatic. Almost universally, my clients are happier and more productive. At the end of the retainer period, my client and I can meet with the sponsor to discuss goals, progress, and the path forward.
